Is pizza a vegetable?

November 21, 2011

You may have heard this startling news: last Tuesday, the U.S. Congress has decided that pizza is in fact a “vegetable” for the purpose of determining what goes into public school lunches, by virtue of the fact that it typically includes a thin coating (two tablespoons) of tomato paste on top of the dough.

The bill stands in direct opposition to school lunch standards set forth by the USDA in June, which called for limiting potatoes and sodium and boosting whole grains. Many critics argue that this conclusion is geared towards protecting the interests of the industry rather then protecting children’s health.

By the way, I personally do love pizza, but prefer a healthier version, with whole grain crusts and lower levels of sodium.

My question to you now is: If pizza is a vegetable, which other meals/objects could be classified as vegetables (or fruits) too?

I will start the ball rolling with:

wine

Wine (because it is made from grapes)

.
.

carrot-cake-cupcakes

Carrot cake (carrots are not the only ingredient, but who cares?)

.

ready-icing-green-3

Green Icing (it’s green)

.
.
.

cherry

Cherry Chapstick (it’s on everybody’s lips)
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.

Please help me generate a list of new “vegetables” 🙂

I vote for “Candy Corn” as the #1 vegetable.

This is great. So, if I eat 2 slices of pizza, drink 2 glasses of wine and top up with a serving of carrot cake, I get my 5 servings, right? LOL

Donuts. Grain is a vegetable, so is sugar, so is the oil they’re fried in.
