Super Size Me

(Morgan Spurlock, 2004)

Super Size Me, the hard-hitting film that deserves to be on our list, documents Morgan Spurlock’s daring experiment of eating only junk food for 30 days and its subsequent effect. Though we already knew that junk food is bad for us, this documentary made an impression on us, because it demonstrates to what extent and how quickly eating poorly can ruin our health!

Why we like it: Because it’s a socially-engaged documentary that forces us to reflect on our food choices.

The Secret of the Grain

(Abdellatif Kechiche, 2007)

This film, whose original French title “La graine et le mulet” already conjures up North-African cuisine (the “grain” is couscous, the “mullet” is the fish that accompanies it), depicts the daily life of Mr. Beiji, a divorced family man who loses his job and decides to set up his own couscous restaurant. Although his plan is fraught with challenges, it serves to bring his old and new family together around a shared dream.

Why we like it: In addition to the mouth-watering scenes devoted to Tunisian cuisine, this film is worth watching for its absolutely outstanding actors and very touching story.

Ratatouille

(Brad Bird, 2007)

This film recounts the adventures of Rémy, a rat who loves to cook. Separated from his family following a disaster, he settles down in the kitchen of a large Parisian restaurant, Chez Gusteau. He secretly helps a commis chef to cook to perfection and deal with food critics.

Why we like it: Because the film attracts both young and old.

Babatte’s Feast should be on this list if only to show how people can be swayed by food in all it’s glory

L’Odeur de la Papaye Verte (The Scent of Green Papaya) should have been on the list, it is a wonderful movie. Also agree with another comment about Babette’s Feast which should have been no. 1 on your list.
