Go moderately nuts for nuts

December 13th 2011

noixSeveral studies demonstrate that frequent eating of nuts (walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts) appears to dramatically improve health: people who eat nuts regularly have lower risks of cardiovascular desease, of developing type 2 diabetes and some cancer types.

Nuts are a good source of fiber and help controlling appetite.

For all these reasons, nuts are often present in your menus, as snack, in granola, or simply added to your salads. It is advisable to eat them regularly, but without overeating, since they are quite calorically dense (2 tbsp give about 100 calories).

While almonds may be bought without their shell, it’s better to buy walnuts in their shell, since the ones that are sold shelled, have often started to go bad already. The best way to preserve nuts is to keep them in their shells, in the refrigerator.
