Happy Father’s Day

Father's DayOriginally published in the Journal de Montréal on June 20, 2009.

Father’s Day owes its origins to two distinct events that happened in the United States in the last century. The first happened in Fairmount, West Virginia in 1908. The second took place in Spokane Washington in 1910. In both cases, religious groups wanted an occasion to honour the father figure of the family.

However, it took several decades before this special day gained popularity. Finally, in 1930, a U.S. national committee was formed and charged with promoting it. The final step came thanks to President Johnson who, in 1966, proclaimed that the third Sunday in June would officially be known as Father’s Day.

Currently, this “holiday” is celebrated in 52 different countries. Not all use the same date to celebrate, but each makes sure that Dad is felt appreciated on that day.
