Father’s Day owes its origins to two distinct events that happened in the United States in the last century. The first happened in Fairmount, West Virginia in 1908. The second took place in Spokane Washington in 1910. In both cases, religious groups wanted an occasion to honour the father figure of the family.

You’d imagine that the Italian national holiday would be celebrated when our soccer team wins the World Cup… but no! It’s today that we are commemorating the 64th anniversary of our republic, which was declared on June 2, 1946.

Spring arrived yesterday! According to astronomy, this season starts with the spring equinox, (from the Latin aequinoctium or aequus meaning ‘equal’ and nox meaning ‘night’). It signifies the first of two specific moments in the year when day and night are equal in length.
Moreover, for the last couple of days, we’ve been getting more than 12 hours of sunshine. And the days will continue to grow longer in the Northern hemisphere up until the summer solstice, which is around June 21st. If you’re like me, you’ll probably be less interested in cooking stews and soups now. I know I would rather be thinking of setting up the barbecue as soon as possible. Long live spring!
