Diabetes Meal Plans

I’ve never followed a diet like yours

In February 2013, I was eating poorly and was affected by several major health problems: diabetes treated with medication, high blood sugar levels, high blood pressure, and a serious weight problem. I knew that at this rate I was putting my life on the line. So I decide to take it into my own hands when I subscribed to the Diabetes Meal Plan, with the okay from my nutritionist.

What I particularly appreciate about SOSCuisine, is the full support for a healthy diet. Via their meal plans, it’s easy to know what and how much to eat and when. Moreover, their meal plans are not typical boring diets: Yesterday we ate ribs, and sometimes we even eat hamburgers and pasta!

SOS Cuisine is an accessible and affordable way to regain control of your health. For me, SOS Cuisine continues to be the “toolbox” I need to maintain my health every day!

Frequently Asked Questions

What Type of Diabetes Meal Plan Is Best for Me?

Why Meal Plans and not just recipes?

It's important to take into accountan entire day, not just one meal at a time, since the nutritional recommendations for type 2 diabetes relate to daily and weekly intakes. For example, the distribution of carbohydrates during the day is particularly important. It is not enough to look for diabetic recipes. In addition, it's important that these recipes be well balanced and arranged, which is taken care of by our nutritionists.

The meal plans are therefore the only effective way to ensure that all recommendations are followed. With SOSCuisine, you're in good hands. And the whole family will benefit, since type 2 diabetes menu is a balanced and appropriate for everyone!

I have diabetes and hypertension and wish to lose weight. Which menu should I choose?

We recommend that you consult your doctor/nutritionist member of the professional association in your area, who are best placed to advise you in this regard.

That said, you can choose the Diabetes Meal Plan, which is offered in three caloric levels: 1500, 1700 or 2100 calories per day. To lose weight, you must choose a calorie level lower your energy needs. It is generally considered that a deficit of 500 calories a day can lose one pound (half kilo) per week, which is safe.Click here to calculate your caloric needs. If you have energy requirements of 2,000 calories per day, choose the menu at 1500 calories. Most of our subscribers (women) with diabetes menus choose 1500 calories, and most subscribers (men) choose 1700 calories.

Regarding hypertension, know that our Diabetes Meal Plans contain less than 7% saturated fat, no artificial trans fat, very little sodium (1725 mg / day on average), lots of fruits and vegetables (9 servings/day on average), follow the recommendations of Canada's food Guide, and can help reduce your blood pressure.

I do not eat meat and wish to lose weight. Which menu should I choose?

If you want to follow a vegetarian version of the Diabetes Meal Plan, we offer lacto-ovo-vegetarian versions, Pesco-vegetarians and semi-vegetarian versions at 1400 kcal, 1800 kcal and 2200 kcal.

Is the Diabetes meal plan Low Carb?

No, the macronutrient distribution in the Diabetes meal plan is as follows (average): 50% carbohydrates, 20% proteins and 30% fats. Subscribe to LCHF (Low Carb Healthy Fat) to receive a meal plan with the following composition: 25% carbohydrates, 25% proteins and 50% fats.

Has the effectiveness of SOSCuisine's Diabetes Meal Plan been tested?

Yes. In May 2012, we did a survey of approximately 580 of those subscribed to the Type 2 Diabetes Meal Plan. The questionaire was validated and the responses compiled by our nutrition team under the leadership of Danielle Lamontagne, Registered Dietitian. The respondants had to classify different objectives in order of importance and indicate what aspect of the meal plan had helped them attain each one of their objectives. The data showed that 86% of our subscribers had better control over their blood sugar thanks to SOSCuisine's meal plans. The results were presented at the Dietitians of Canada National Conference in Victoria, BC, in June 2013.

Which foods are found in the meal plans and why?

For breakfast, it is recommended to eat one fruit, 1-2 servings of grains, 1 serving of milk or alternatives, and 1 source of protein. For example, diabetes meal plans might suggest a breakfast of a banana, a slice of bread, oats (oatmeal) and a glass of milk which is both the dairy and the protein source .

Between meals, healthy snacks will satisfy your munchies.

You will find fish in the meal plan twice a week because it is rich in complete protein, low in calories, and low in fat. It contributes to cardiovascular health. Every day, your meal plan contain dark-green and orange vegetables that bring you vitamins and antioxidants. On occasion, we offer delicious salads, which, thanks to their low energy density and their high fiber content, promote satiety signals. The meal plans also contain the recommended amounts of grains, because they are rich in fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Grain products are distributed intelligently throughout the day for optimal distribution of daily carbohydrates. Occasionally, pasta dishes are on offer. The glycemic index of "al dente" pasta is relatively low, so it doesn't cause blood sugar spikes. In addition, the pasta is served with protein sources to create a balanced diabetic diet.

Desserts are not excluded, because having fun is important for maintaining new eating habits! Even if they contain a small amount of added sugar, our desserts are based on fruit or milk and respect the daily carbohydrate requirements.
