Father’s Day

Father’s Day has its origins in two events that took place in the US early last century: the first, in Fairmount, West Virginia, in 1908 and the second, independent of the first, in Spokane, Washington, in 1910. In both cases, religious groups wanted to honor the figure of the father of the family. It took a few decades for this celebration, which was scorned at the beginning, to gain recognition until the formation in the 1930s of a national committee in the United States to promote it.

It was President Johnson who in 1966 proclaimed the third Sunday of June, Father’s Day. Nowadays, this celebration is celebrated on different dates in 52 countries, with a resounding commercial success.
