Candlemas: The Feast of Crêpes

Also known as Chandeleur, Candlemas is celebrated on February 2nd, 40 days after Christmas. Around the same date, in February, in the time of the Romans, a fertility festival was celebrated in the streets of Rome with torches. In 472, Pope Galasius I decided to christianise this feast, which would become the Feast of the Presentation of our Lord Jesus.

It is said that Gelasius I would have crêpes served to pilgrims arriving in Rome. It was also said that if crêpes were not made on the day of Candlemas, the wheat would be blighted for the rest of the year.

So, I invite you to respect the tradition and treat yourself to delicious crêpes or pancakes:
