A golden year for apples

26 septembre, 2009

At least something good came out of all the rain that fell this past July: the apple harvest is the best of the last 13 years.

Whether you are an avid apple picker or just buy them at the corner store, I invite you to take advantage since fall apples – ripening on the trees as we speak – are at their best right now.

The apple first originated in Caucasus, and harvesting began 8,000 years before our time. It was the Romans who later planted orchards throughout their immense Empire.

These days, competition is fierce among all of the fruits available to us – and we keep finding different virtues in each. But do not give up on ‘our’ apple, and add it to your menu often.

In fact, several studies have shown that when people regularly eat apples, they are less likely to suffer from asthma, cardiovascular diseases and lung cancer. This reinforces the age-old saying: « An apple a day keeps the doctor away. »
